August Update: HR 2901 Action Expected After Labor Day; 97 Cosponsors Listed by State

Before Congress left town for the August recess, the WASH policy coalition, led by Millennium Water Alliance, WaterAid in America, InterAction, and WASH Advocates, worked with chief sponsors Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) and Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) to secure even more cosponsors and get support for a mark-up of HR 2901, The Sen. Paul Simon Water for the World Act, in the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

If the bill is approved by the committee soon after Congress returns on September 8, it could quickly go before the full House of Representatives for a vote, and then be sent to the US Senate. If the Senate can act quickly enough (yes, that has been known to happen on non-controversial pieces of legislation), our long effort to make key improvements in the way USAID administers the Water for the Poor Act will meet success – in this Congress!

Just as a reminder, this bill does not provide the annual funding for WASH programs under the Water for the Poor Act – that is separate legislation, and so far in that appropriations process, the key House committee has recommended level funding for FY 2015 at $365 million, while Senate appropriators have recommended $400 million.

For more information on HR 2901, see “What the Water for the World Act Will Do” under Latest Advocacy Updates.

Below see our new state-by-state list of current House cosponsors of HR 2901. If a member from your state is on the list, let them know you appreciate it! Call them at 202-225-3121 (the US Capitol switchboard), or email them through their own Member websites, which you can find at http://www.house.gov/representatives/
