LM International Joins as 30th Member of the Millennium Water Alliance

March 6, 2025, Washington, DC / Nairobi, Kenya – The Millennium Water Alliance Board of Directors is pleased to announce that LM International has been approved as our 30th member organization, a milestone in MWA membership.

LM International is a Swedish global faith-based non-profit foundation founded in 1958, with strong expertise in water security/water, sanitation, and hygiene, and a particular track record of community centered interventions in fragile and conflict contexts, including countries such as Yemen, Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Niger, Chad, Mali, Ukraine, and Somalia.

Beyond fragile contexts, LM International brings a focus on climate resilience and locally led climate adaptation as well as long-term systems approaches, well aligned with MWA’s newly updated membership strategy of adding expertise in humanitarian relief and climate resilience. It operates in 25 countries, and in 2024 had a budget of nearly $50 million USD.

“LM International’s expertise in some of the most difficult global conflict and climate contexts is increasingly valuable to MWA and its members now,” said MWA CEO Keith Wright. “This will be a critical area for the sector moving forward. They are a key implementing partner with UNCHR, UNICEF, and ECHO and also bring further perspective from a leading European organization along with our other European-based members.”

“Grounded in our mission to save lives and empower people, LM International enters this partnership with a clear ambition: to scale our impact across the Sahel and Horn of Africa, regions facing growing water insecurity and climate pressures,” said Dr. Josephine Sundqvist, Secretary-General and Global CEO of LM International.

“No organization can meet these challenges alone. Real transformation comes from joining other WASH innovators and humanitarian actors committed to resilience and locally led change, Dr. Sundqvist said.

“We are proud to join the Millennium Water Alliance. Together, we can put community-led water resource management at the center of global WASH efforts to strengthen systems, elevate local leadership and drive sustainable solutions that endure.”

The Millennium Water Alliance, founded in 2002, is a permanent global alliance of humanitarian, research, and business organizations that delivers global water security and resilience results by mobilizing a community of expert members, driving collective action and thought leadership, and influencing strategic funding. MWA’s member organizations work in more than 100 countries and serve more than 50 million people every year with water security and resilience results.
