Diagnostic Visit in La Guajira

Posted Sep 8, 2015

Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Erick Toledo from the Desert Research Institute to La Guajira. Erick is an expert in WASH projects in rural communities in Central America. He also has extensive knowledge of how the “circuit rider model” works. The “circuit rider model” is a sustainable model that organizes rural communities with roaming WASH technicians to provide improved and continuous water service. This model has had success in Honduras and El Salvador.

With the support of Aguayuda, Erick had the opportunity to visit some of the communities where Aguayuda works as well as meet with various key actors in the water sector such as:
• Mayor of Manaure: Manaure is a municipality of La Guajira.
• Corpoguajira: Corpoguajira is a government entity responsible for the sustainable management of water resources.
• AAA Manaure: AAA Manaure is a public provider of services in the urban and surrounding rural communities in Manaure.
• SENA: SENA is a vocational institute that provides valuable job training including for the water sector.
• 2 legally recognized water associations: These associations were created with the support of Aguayuda and Lazos de Agua.
• Plan Departmental of Water (PDA): PDA is responsible for strategic planning and implementation of infrastructure projects in La Guajira.

The diagnostic visit provided insight on how the different organizations in La Guajira work in the water sector and identified strengths as well as weaknesses. This information is essential to developing a model that will improve the water service in the rural communities of La Guajira.
