Composting Bin Solution for Loveable Loo

Posted Nov 11, 2013

After 133 days, the loveable loo is working well for Jose and his family.

Technically, one issue came up regarding the wood used to build the base of the loveable loo. The inside of the box had some areas that were not adequately treated and termites began eating the wood. A termite pesticide was used to exterminate the termites. In the future, all loveable loos will be treated with a termite resistance finish to avoid this problem.

An appropriate solution for the feces and urine that are stored in the bucket of the loveable was implemented on October 10, 2013. Aguayuda installed a composting bin made by EarthGreen, a Colombian company, near José’s home. When the bucket is full, José empties the bucket into the composting bin. It is recommended to place a 2cm layer of sawdust to cover the feces in the composting bin.

The composting bins are made in Colombia and are made of a durable plastic that allows the composting bin to be installed outside. The composting bins are designed to provide optimal ventilation for the composting process. The composting process in optimal conditions is complete after one to two months.

Currently after using the composting bin for 31 days, the composting bin contents have zero smell and are converting the feces into compost at an appropriate rate.

EarthGreen has various composting bin sizes depending on the size and needs of the community.
