Implementation of 41 Composting Latrines

Posted Jan 24, 2014

In December 2013, the construction of 41 composting latrines began for the Ideas for Change project match in Wayúumana, Kasiche I, Kasiche II and La Parcela. The logistics to deliver the materials to each family was very challenging for the Aguayuda team. The materials transported to the community included:

•3 different types of wood for the housing

•41 Composting Latrines

•82 Buckets

•Nails

•Metal wire

•Sawdust

Once a family built the housing for the composting latrine, they received a composting latrine. This was followed with an explanation on how to operate and maintain the composting latrine. A poster was provided in Spanish that explains the daily use of the composting latrine.

By the end of December, 5 composting latrines were complete and in use. Besides the challenge of having the community accept and use the composting latrines properly, another challenge is to provide enough sawdust for each family on the daily basis. Fortunately, there is a town nearby, Maicao, where free sawdust can be retrieved. The next step is to organize the four communities to organize a trash / sawdust transportation system. The idea is to use a donkey and cart to transport the trash from the communities to Maicao and then return with bags of sawdust. Such a service would require a fee, however, the benefit for the community would be that they have a solution that solves the trash and sanitation problem.

As of the 23th of January, a total of 20 composting latrines were completed and distributed.
