Quick fixes for the SkyBox Filter

Posted Mar 1, 2015

The SkyBox filter is one of the filters Aguayuda is installing in the Lazos de Agua project. In general, the SkyBox filter has worked as designed. However, one weakness of the filter is that it is required that the filter always stays submerged in water. If the filter dries out, the membrane does not work anymore.

In many of our communities, the drought for this year has already begun. Therefore these communities have a limited amount of water and this puts the SkyBox filter at high risk of drying out.

As a quick fix, we added extra PVC piping to prevent the SkyBox from drying out. The water level will never go below the height of the SkyBox filter.

We also noticed due to the drought, that more bees are attracted to the water tanks because it is one of the few water sources in the community with water. Therefore, we are in the process of adding mesh to the tanks to prevent bees and other insects to enter inside the tanks. The cost of these solutions are minimal (US $10.00).
In short, these quick and economical fixes will improve the performance of the SkyBox filter to provide clean water to the communities in need.
