FH MARKS GLOBAL HAND WASHING DAY;ISIOLO&MARSABIT

Posted Oct 20, 2013

The global hand washing day is marked annually on October 15th with an aim of increasing awareness on the importance of hand washing with soap at critical times. Simple practices of hand washing with soap can reduce diarrheal illnesses by 50% and upper respiratory tract illnesses by 25%, both of these being big health impacts.

FH Kenya marked this year\'s Global hand washing day in both Isiolo and Marsabit counties. In Isiolo the day was commemorated in Kinna of Garbatula sub county and it was a big success.
In Marsabit the event was marked in three sites in Laisamis, Marsabit Central and Sololo sub counties.

The immense support by FH Kenya through the KALDRR WASH USAID funded program saw the successful marking of these events.

An estimated number of 8,500 school pupils converged at all the respective sites in both counties for the hand washing event. Demonstrations of proper hand washing techniques were also done.

There was overwhelming attendance by all schools from the expected catchments.

The enthusiasm & performance of school children exceeded expectations. The songs, poems & dance truly captured the theme of the day. \"The power is in your hands\"

Government officials and the local leadership graced the occasions with immense enthusiasm.

Respective DPHOs from Garbatula .Laisamis,Marsabit and Sololo and with their able PHOs and incredible network of CHWs did enormous ground work.
To their credit & with immense support of FH, social mobilization was done well & went along way in contributing to the success of the day.
