Watershed Restoration Strengthens Water Security in Northern Ethiopia

In North Mecha, Ethiopia, communities are restoring degraded hillsides, and water is returning to the land. In the Minzir 01 micro-watershed, a WRI-led effort supported by partners including the Millennium Water Alliance and WaterAid has helped refill wells, revive streams, and green the landscape through soil and water conservation, tree planting, and land restoration. Groundwater levels have risen, springs have emerged, and two once-seasonal streams now flow through the dry season.

These results show that healthy watersheds are the foundation of reliable water sources — essential for water, sanitation, and hygiene, as well as for resilient livelihoods.
